I expect to be in the Rhode Island area in general, though will be basing my activities out of Providence, so other location s in the vicinity (Newport, Woonsocket, etc.) are possible. >Thanks for any help. >Marshall Smith >[email removed] Here are a few restaurants I ate at recently and consider to be notable. * Trattoria Antuono - small and informal place; try their fried calamari and their veal chop. * L'Epicureo - brand new restaurant (actually major renovation of their old one). Had a delicious pasta dish with *real* scallops (I emphasize real, because too many places substitute scallops with a bland tasting fish - inexcusable to say the least!). Both service and food here are excellent. Both of these restaurants are on Atwells Ave. This is the "Federal Hill" Italian district of Providence. * The Florentine Grille (or Cafe - not quite sure) - located on the Douglas Pike (Rte. 7) near Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence. Great atmosphere and service. Key word here is "Grille". Wonderful veal sausage, chicken, etc. I wrote a review to ne.food and alt.rhode_island newsgroups recently - check it out. * Il Picolo - located in a strip mall on Rte. 5 in Johnston (about a 15 minute drive from Providence along Rte. 6). Nice atmosphere and service. They have some rather unique dishes. Try their bruschetta - great appetizer. Of course there's more, but hopefully you'll find one of the above to be within your proximity. It's a great place to be for Italian food. In fact, these places could stand up very well to restaurants in the better known North End of Boston. I used to live in Newport and had no trouble finding great places to eat there. Unfortunately, since there's always a fair amount of turnover of restaurants there, my info is very dated for that area. Most of the places are great seafood places. You may consider writing to the Newport Gateway to get some tourist brochures for Newport. It's a really nice and scenic place, although somewhat crowded with tourists at this time of year. Enjoy your stay in Little Rhody! Joe

The rue melt and the french toast specials are the best and everything on the menu is good. Apsara's (broad and public) for thai/vietnemese/etc is good and cheap. The Indian place on the south side of Wickendon is better than the place on the north side. There's a new mexican place next to the sunnybrook farm on brook st that has has excellent tamales.
