PIZZA

	WOW.

Since I saw so many articles about pizza, I decided I would toss in my own $.02 and then try to justify it.

Originally I come from Taylor PA, which is basically the middle of nowhere just outside of Scranton. Maybe you skiers have heard of Montage? That's my home, for better or for worse.

Anyway, one of the little suburbs near mine, Old Forge, is jam-packed with pizza-makin' Italians. They seriously probably have about 3 times as many pizza places as they do red lights.

The pizza there, my favorite being 'Augustine's Club 17,' perhaps because I grew up on it, is almost exclusively Sicilian. When I ask for a "tray" of pizza at home it's understood immediately what I mean, but I've tried this in places like Philly and Boston and have been looked at as if I had just escaped from an asylum somewhere.

Another thing I found about my 'home' pizza: When I order pizza at home, I consider it a meal, but down here I just think of it as a snack.

I hope someone found any of this interesting.

	So long.

The best pizza I've found thusfar in California is at a little take-out place called "Ricco's" on Ocean Ave. in Lompoc.

The second-best is Domenico's in Pasadena.

My favorite would have to be Bella's pizza in Abingdon VA.

The best pizza I've had in California was at Ramona's, on Ramona Ave. in Palo Alto, just down the street from the Stanford Theatre. It's a great place to take a date after an old movie at the theatre. The second best that I've tried in Calfornia (possibly a tie for first) was (and only once unfortunately) Paolo's in San Jose. The third best in California (well, maybe I'd better change the category to the South Bay, since I haven't had much Southern Cal. pizza) is probably Florentine's, but specifically the Florentine's on De Anza Blvd. in Cupertino- truly awesome mushroom pizza.

Now, in Illinois, things are different:
1) Uno
2) Due
3) Edwardo's
4) Papa Del's (on Green Street in Champaign)
4 (a tie)) Garcia's (on Wright Street in Champaign)

My explanation for the tie is this: Papa Del's simply has a better stuffed pizza than Garcia's, but the cheese is too salty, so if it gets cold it gets gross to eat, whereas Garcia's has some of the best tomato sauce I've ever had on pizza, but thhave pizza by the slice, which sucks. :-Dan

The best pizza in California is at Pearl's Pizza in Twentynine Palms. Of course I haven't been there for 7 or 8 years (since I moved back to Pittsburgh) but if they are still there it's worth the drive. Besides you can always go camping at Joshua Tree and drive into town for dinner.

For the most interesting pizza in California there is a little pizza place whose name I don't remember in Trona. Trona is a very small town in the middle of nowhere next to Searles Dry Lake where they mine borax. Anyone who is a rockhound may have heard of it. There's a gem and mineral show there every year. They have a list of maybe 30 or 40 toppings (well, alot, anyway) which include some very strange items like peanutbutter. Same disclaimer as above since I haven't been there in years.

The best pizza in the world, IMNSHO, is at Vincent's Pizza Park in Pittsburgh, PA, (well actually, in N. Versailles). Thick chewy crust and huge chunks of fresh Italian sausage (never those little sausage pellets that look like rabbit droppings which you get most places). It's one of those places that people either love or hate, but, hey, what do those people who hate it know about pizza anyway.

I may as well add my $0.02 to the "Best Pizza" debate.

My choice has to go to a place in South Portland Maine called:

                        Ricetta's.

They have two wood burning pizza ovens that crank out the BEST pizza I have ever had anywhere in the country and I have tried many. All ingredients are of the freshest quality, and the dough, both regular and wheat, are fresh daily. No pre-fab shells here. Their prep and cooking area is behind glass but open to the diners and you will see shells being tossed in the air. The sauce is pure and unadulterated with chunks of tomato in it.

I highly reccommend it if you are anywhere in New England. It is really worth the trip.

I grew up in Philly and lived there for 45 years before moving to Texas. I lived around the corner from Taconnelli's and back then (when they were small) the pizza was great... really great. They even delivered!! But lately from everything I've heard, they've gotten too big for themselves. A few awards in Phila Mag and they think themselves the premier pizza place in the city... Maybe it's just the new generation that's running the place.
