Not a soda fountain, but the best frozen custard in the world, IMHO, is at Hanks between Meadville and Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania (northwestern part of the stat, of I-79). Hanks has been generating long lines of adoring fans for over 35 year. I've even had to stand in the April snow waiting for a Hank's. This is authentic frozen custard made in old machines that haven't been manufactured in decades. Chocolate and vanilla plus a flavor-of the-day. Worth driving well out of your way for. Actually, it was a custard operation in a fruit stand, and they crushed fresh fruit to mix with the custard. The flavor was magnificent, putting to shame all the artificial "fruit" flavors we have become accustomed to. I don't know if they are still there, or if they still use fresh fruit. Are there other custard stands around the country that do this? Peter Dorman
As a former Wisconsinite, I am heartened by the fact that my childhood was not wasted thinking the best frozen custard is in my home state. If you're in Oshkosh, try "Leons" on Murdock at the north end of town. The bonus is you get to step back into a time-warp. They have carhops. These carhops are not some '80's/90's retro put-on...it's the way it has always been! Wisconsin...frozen custard...Oshkosh...Leons...some things never change Steve Zimmerman Scottsdale, AZ
