The food was most excellent, but I found the service to be below average for a restaurant in that price range. As for ritziness of dress....a couple steps below what you would see in a place like LaMont seemed to be the norm. I've never been to Monterey Bay, so I can't comment on that. One drawback of the PGH Fish Market, besides the service, is that the entire restaurant is non-smoking. You have to go to the bar if you want to smoke, so forget about ordering your food and having a cig while you wait, and don't even think about finishing your excellent meal and then kicking back to relax with a cigarette. One more comment on the service...it wasn't terrible, but I certainly expected it to be better. I've only been to the Fish Market once, though, so perhaps we were just unlucky with the waiter assigned to us. -Damon.
While the Fish Market isn't a _bad_ restaurant by any means, I personally don't think it's nearly as good as Monterey Bay. The fish at Monterey Bay is fabulous - my husband says the Ahi tuna there is the best he's had in this city, and the crabcakes are amazing. The selection is enormous - all of the standard fish you'd expect, plus many of the more exotic types not usually served in Pittsburgh restaurants. The service is very nice, too. In comparison, the dinners we've had at the Fish Market were just about average - nothing special. Somtimes the fish didn't seem to be as fresh as it could be, and there were a few times that the food just didn't taste good (i.e., the polenta served as the base for my mahimahi was so incredibly salty as to be inedible). I've also found the service to be lacking. Waiters disappear for long stretches of time. In one instance, we asked for some spoons to stir our coffee, and the waitress came back, flung down 9 spoons (note that there were only four of us at the table), and left. Not exactly the epitome of good service :-) Hope this helps! -jennifer Brian Z. wrote: > I've heard good things about the Pittsburgh Fish Market in the > Doubletree, but I have a couple questions: > > a) comparison vs. Monterey Bay if anyone's been to both > > b) dress / ritziness > > Thanks for the input! > > Brian
I HAVE EATEN AT BOTH MONTERAY BAYS AND THE FISHMARKET. THERE IS NO COMPARISON...THE FISHMARKET IN THE DOUBLETREE IS, WITHOUT ANY DOUBT, A MUCH BETTER RESTAURANT THAN THE BAYS. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO COMREHEND ANYONE'S FINDING THE BAY AN EQUAL, OR BETTER, RESTAURANT! THAT'S LIKE COMPARING WENDY'S WITH MORTON'S STEAKHOUSE. NOTHING IS COMPARABLE...THE SELECTION OF BOURBONS AND WHISKIES, BEERS, AND THE WINE LIST AT THE FISHMARKET ARE OUTSTANDING (I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE PALMEYER UNFILTERED CHARDONNAY AT THE FISHMARKET); THE SELECTION OF APPETIZERS, THE MAIN COURSES, AND THE SIDE DISHES ARE OUTSTANDING; THE DESSET LIST IS NOT OUTSTANDING...AND YET IS IT SUPERIOR TO THE BAYS'. THE FISHMARKET IS EXPENSIVE. JUST THREE WEEKS AGO, DINNER FOR THREE, WITH THE PALMEYER CHARDONNAY, A ROUND OF COCKTAILS BEFORE DINNER, AND SEVERAL SNIFTERS OF COGNAC AFTERWARD WAS AWARDED A TAB OF $512.00 HOWEVER! I WAS MORE COMFORTABLE WITH A $512.00 TAB FOR A WONDERFUL EVENING RATHER THAN SPENDING $111.00 AT THE MT. WASHINGTON MONTERAY BAY FOR DINNER FOR TWO, WITH A FAIR BOTTLE OF WINE (THAT'S ALL THEY HAVE) AND A HALIBUT FLOATING IN A BOWL OF THICKENED ORANGE JUICE.
