If you're interested, try Jim's Cheese Steaks, at 4th and South, very near to Penn's Landing.

If you're in the mood for slightly more upmarket fare, try Le Bec Fin, which is a nationally recognized French restaurant. My favorite restaurants in the city:
            * Magnolia Cafe: Cheap Cajun, pleasant surroundings,
                         tasty food.
            * Upstairs at Varelli: Moderate Italian, excellent bread,
                          pasta, carpaccio, etc.
            * Cobble Fish: In Manyunk, you'll need a car to get
                          there. Terrific seafood, byo.

: 2.) Anybody know the area of town called Penn's Landing? : I am staying in an area called Penn's Landing. Restaurants in the : area or sights to see in the area (or comments on the area) would : be greatly appreciated.

Penn's landing is the historical area along the Delaware river.
Near the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House, South Street (kind of the Grenwich Village of Philly, and not far from center city.

Have fun.

- There are some outstanding Italian restaurants in Philly - probably one of the best is La Famiglia - not far from Penn's Landing and an unbelievable wine list - but very pricey and a pretty formal atmosphere - our other two favorite Italian restaurants are Saloon in S. Philly and La Veranda on the waterfront (near Penn's Landing). There are also several less formal and very good Italian restaurants particularly in S. Philly

-For French with excellent wine list and not quite as pricey as Le Bec Fin try Ciboulette - on Broad St.

-On of our all time favorites is an american french place out in a little suburb called Morton (on rt 420 near Springfield) It's called the American Bistro - it's a BYO so the wine list is whatever you bring (don't count on Philly wine and spirits stores for an excellent selection though - unless you go to Rittenhouse Square)

-another unique place is Jack's Firehouse by the art museum - great game and other American specialties, we also like London's (in the same area - a little more casual and not as expensive)

Bon Appetite

Ralph's Italian Restaurant on 9th Street just north about 1 or 2 blocks of the Italian market. It is tres So Philly Italian, IMHO. Terrific food, atmosphere, reasonably priced. Try to sit upstairs (there's 2 floors in a converted row house). I'll never forget my last visit, as I was leaving the building & a cook asked me if I had soup or salad w/my meal. I said "salad" & how much I had really enjoyed it. He was so excited, he proceeded to explain all about the preparation of the salad, took me back for a tour of his area in the kitchen where *he* prepares the salads (!) --this guy made all their salads, was totally proud of his salads & slept easier knowing that someone liked his salad...

A nice touch! Go, enjoy --oh, to bring me back some!

I saw someone else's list, but here's mine:
1) Marrakesh - Moroccan food, great dining experience. Make reservations early!
2) Cedars- Middle Eastern. Try anything with the garlic sauce and the dried yogurt appetizer
3) South Street Souvlaki - only ate there once, but it was great Greek food.
4) Silk of Siam - excellent Thai food out on Lancaster Ave in Bryn Mawr.

I cannot believe everyone forgot about Victor's Cafe. This is my all time favorite Italian restaurant anywhere. Though pricey, it has the best atmosphere in the whole world. Probably best if you go with a large group or on a date.

Other restaurants I like:
Knave of Hearts--good continental cuisine with different twists.
Very good and it's on South Street.
Donatello's--out on the Waterfront. Great greek food and
reasonably priced.

:)

If you like a good steak house, Kansas City Prime in
Manayunk serves just about the best steak that I've ever had. It's pretty pricey, but if you like that kind of food and you have some extra money, then it's definitely worth the trip. It's actually worth the trp to go to Manayunk anyway -- it's so nice and quaint -- you can walk around for a while, and there are several very good restaurants to choose from.

Seema made me think of one more Philadelphia favorite- Ralph's italian restaurant in Little Italy. My grandmother's favorite and still in business.

Also if I forgot to mention it Jack's deli in the Northeast.

Just caught your thread on Philadelphia area restaurants, sorry if these are repeats:

Dmitri's - Yummy BYOB with a Greek seafood theme. The calamari is out of this world. Striped Bass - Super expensive but worth it for a (very) special occasion. Susannah Food - World class Chinese.

Hope you enjoy your visit.
