Just want to follow up on my own post. We did get to the Monterey Fish Grotto
last night and must report that the food was just as good as it used to be in
Penn Hills. I had maki tuna prepared sashimi style (grilled rare, with pickled
ginger, wasabi, and soy on the side), and my friend had salmon Rodi Grille House
style. In both cases, the fish was perfectly done and well presented with side
dishes of roasted red-skin potatoes and sauteed zucchini. We both had the
chowder vs. salad for first course--also excellent. We did have to wait about
30 minutes for a table, not having realized that a reservation would be
necessary. I guess we thought that the newness of the place and the lousy
weather would mean that business would be sparse, but we were wrong. I'm not
crazy about the new location in the Jonnett Building...who cares about a table
with a view when the view is of the Miracle Mile? Still, I'll look forward to
going back. Prices for fish entrees range from $14-$18--very reasonable for
what you get. I remember from Rodi Road that the desserts were also good, but
this time we did not indulge.
