The best place I've been to in the city is Mineo's, on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill. Take the Squirrel Hill exit off the Parkway (exit 8). The pizza is excellent, there's other kinds of food, and the price is really good. The best place I've been to outside the city is in Mt. Lebanon, and I was only there once, and it was a long time ago. I think it was called Beto's, but it might be Bedo's, or something like that. The pizza was good, and there was a good selection of other food, too - again not too expensive. I was with my gf when I went, and she knows the directions, but I don't. I can remember going through the Fort Pitt Tunnel off the Parkway and taking one of the first exits (something Road?) and following that road. Sorry I can't remember more.. Maybe someone else can help? Good luck. ERIC

Best Pizza in Pittsburgh
i HONESTLY DON'T REMEMber the name of one place but it is in the Penn Hills Shopping Center off of Frankstown Rd. about 3 stores down from Hills. The Best Pizza I had was at Artie's in Trafford.
A good place is this place in Century III mall-- I think it's called Italian Village Pizza. My favorite place was TNT Express who I got delivery from many times, but now their line says they are "temporarily" closed. Anyone know what happened to them?

Beto's is mostly takeout; Bado's has a nice restaurant (and both better pizza and a better selection). However, if you are in Mt. Lebanon, you can get even better pizza at Caruso's, on Washington Rd. (across from the Denis Theatre). ****************************************************************** Jim Mann [email removed] Transarc Corporation The Gulf Tower, 707 Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219 (412) 338-4442 WWW Homepage: http://www.transarc.com/~jmann/Home.html

I was thinking of Banksville Road, and actually, when I was there, I ate at the restaurant (small, fairly clean) - I live too far away for practical takeout (at CMU in Oakland) from Mt. Lebanon. I've never been to the other two places, but I'll have to try them sometime. As for why I liked the two places, pizza isn't my _favorite_ food, but I just thought as far as overall quality and taste (though I'm not exceedingly discriminating, I can usually tell _bad_ from _good_ and in between), those are the two best I've had in the city. I also liked the price at Mineo's, which I seem to recall is one of the better bargains around. I haven't been to either place for a while, and don't honestly remember specifics about the food or prices. I never thought the pizza at Mineo's was _that_ greasy, but I'm used to the local delivery places (Domino's, Pizza Outlet, Papa John's, Larry & Carol's), almost all of whom have greasy pizza. Makes $.04 total. ERIC

The best Pizza in Pittsburgh isn't in Pittsburgh. It's in Wheeling (1 hr drive). De Carlos Pizza in Elm Grove. They don't deliver, and they only have two kinds -- with and without pepperoni. The times I've had it the sauce was fabulous, tasted like fresh tomatos, nicely spiced without being over oreganoed (my complaint with most Pgh sauces), and with thick slices of pepperoni. There is a DeCarlos on RT 51 about 1/2 way between the West Liberty Ave and Rt 88, but I don't know if it's the same. Have to try it some day. toodles, gretchen From [email removed] Thu Aug 14 15:45:02 EDT 1997 Article: 35314 of rec.food.restaurants
I think that if you're going to rate the pizza, you have to say why you like it. I know many who love Mineo's, but I personally cannot stand it. It's too cheesy and greasy. I have to pat it down with a napkin before ingesting it. Others like Vincent's for the same reason. I like Larry & Carol's and Pizza Perfectta. Both have an excellent sauce, which is my favorite part of a pizza. It has a tangy zest, and compliments pepperoni & mushrooms quite well. Both of these establishments make a great spinach & garlic and spinach & chicken pizza, too. My only complaints is that neither place is particularly consistent. When I get a good one, it's very good, when I don't, it's edible. Sooooooooooo, say why you like the pizza. Mineo's may be great, but it's not what I look for or like. gReg

Their pizza is very good and had some nice touches for the very reasonable price, like fresh sliced toppings (not a wimpy water logged mushroom in sight) and a wide assortment of differnt types of Pizza. The feta and spinich with white sauce and garlic is to die for. Paul

Pino's in Point Breeze on 6739 Reynolds Ave. 361-1336 reason why: --I like their specialty pizzas--calazones--cheabatas(sp) --they have good red sauce. --they're crust is thin, but I do believe they have a thicker crust--Chicago. --they have a really good clam and asparagus pizza. I don't get the heavy white sauce, I just have it scampied. (butter and garlic) --they are not a chain, so it's community business support thing--and his food is better any how, so I don't have to make any sacrafices. What I like best about them is that when everyone's in a pizza mood and I'm not I have this huge menu to choose from, and I have enjoyed trying they're many dishes. I like the fact that I can get a really good dinner - take out or delivery - instead of cooking, or instead of ordering fast food. I really enjoy their chicken parmigiana sub, and they're tuna steak salad. They have great foccacio(sp) bread sandwiches too. They really have much, much more than most delivery places and 9 times out of 10, I really enjoy their food. I HATE anything burnt so that's my major complaint with most pizza and hoagie places, when the food comes out of those ovens the edges are usually burnt, and I find that very gross, so I always say ---and please don't burn it--- where ever I go, not just Pino's. The best pizza in Pittsburgh is NAPOLI'S!!!!!! It's real good and fresh ITALIAN pizza. Also free delivery to a fairly large area. (Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, etc..) Try it. (Squirrel Hill on Murray) THere use to be one on Fifth in Oakland, but I don't know if it's still there. This is one place when I left the 'burgh I missed terribly and now that I'm back I'm loving it.

I've had it several times, and there's absolutely nothing special about it, IMHO. To each his own.

Good pizza, > fair prices, relatively quick delivery. All those are true and I've been having pizza delivered from them since they opened (I remember having to give them directions not only to Wean Hall but to CMU the first few times), but after the first month or two they were open every pizza I've received at CMU or at home in Squirrel Hill has been cold. > (Ever order from Larry and Carol's? talk about slow delivery...) L&C's is amazingly slow and inconsistent about it so you can't plan on waiting an hour--maybe this time it'll come in 40 minutes or maybe it'll be 80. Good pizza though. > For take-out or eat-in, I prefer Aiello's (sp?) in Squirrel Hill. I'll pick up pizza from Aiello's if I'm walking home. I can't notice any major differences between them and Napoli's or Mineo's, but it's closer to where I live than Napoli's and seems to be the fastest of the three for me to get in and out of. If I'm in Oakland, I'll usually go to Sorrento's which has a good deep dish pizza (which they call Chicago style though it isn't). mINEO'S IS THE BEST IN MY OPINION AND IT IS NOT GREASY! THIS IS OLIVE OIL AND NATURAL JUICES THAT COME FROM THE CHEESE WHICH UNLIKE A LOT OF OTHER PLACES IS REAL AND NOT A CHEESE SUBSTITUTE
Well, we really seem to be reaching consensus on the pizza issue :-)
I've lived in Boston, Long Island, and the San Francisco Bay, and
Pittsburgh has the worst pizza of any of these communities, in general.
What is commonly regarded as excellent pizza here would be considered
mediocre in many other cities.
My favorite pizza places here are not the most popular ones:
Very good pizza:
East End Food Coop: very good individual size pizzas.
Good crust, nice choice of vegetarian ingredients.
I think they serve it only from 11am - 4pm.
Holiday Inn, Oakland (their restaurant food is surprisingly good)
Pino's, Reynolds St, Point Breeze.
I like their Calabrese pizza. Nice, thin crust, good ingredients,
not overloaded with cheese or sauce.
Tolerable pizza:
Vincent's: meat too salty, often overcooked, bad aftertaste
Mineo's: unremarkable
Yuck:
Domino's, Little Caesar's
----
If you ever want world class pizza, try Pauline's Pizza in San Francisco,
or Zachary's in Berkeley CA.Nico's Recovery Room - 176 Pearl Street in Pittsburgh's Bloomfield section. It's a neighborhood bar/restaurant that serves the best of Greek and American dishes.....and Greek pizza is one of their specialties....it's a delightful experience.
Little Italy in Oakland has changed owners again and IMHO there pizza is pretty good, almost kickass! Their dough makes a world of difference. Ritesh The lit
vincent's on forbes avenue squirrel hill is bad--stick to route 30 for original taste. but fyi, figure out which guy is vince, watch him go into men's room and emerge later with same flour dust on his hands then go back to flying the pizza pies. and you wondered what that extra special taste on the pie was... brad
