John,

Welcome to the beautiful pacific northwest. As a transplanted New Yorker who has lived (not survived) in Portland - its a great place to visit and a better place to live.

In downtown Portland you have Jake's Seafood, The Couch St. Fish House and Mc Cormick and Schmick - all seafood - all good - expensive for Portland - cheap compared to Boston.

In the Northwest section you have Basaws for fish and Song of the Rose for Vegetarian- both moderately priced.

Newport Bay is a chain - good not great - they are all over Portland and very moderately priced.

Enjoy your vacation.

Old Wives Tale is great seafood/veggis restaurant on East side of town -- casual and inexp. McCormick and Schmicks or Jakes are hip, upscale seafood joints. Atwaters (on top of tallest building in town), Heathman Hotel, Pazzo Ristorante are excellent continental/Meditteranean/Italian choices with good wine lists.
