The Kebab House has only been open a week. I just found out about it and rushed right over for lunch. It's on N. Harrison Ave, between Chapel Hill Rd. and Chatham St. It's just north of the train tracks in that red brick row of shops. tel. 460-1300

Good stuff! The menu says, "All kebabs are freshly prepared from scratch with no preservatives or additives." The owner, Turan Ozturk, is making a good start and I hope it really takes off--because I've been waiting and hoping for a Turkish restaurant here.

For a reasonable price ($4.99-6.99) you have your choice of Doner, Iskender, Shish, or Chicken Shish kebab. Or you can get lamb & beef Kofte, Pirzola (lamb chops).

And if you've got to try it all, try the mix kebab platter for $7.99. It was delicious. There are a number of salads, and also some daily soups and specials that I'll have to try next time. But the house salad, heavy on fresh garden tomatoes, was very good. I saw some borek there too, though it's not on the menu yet (that's savory pastry, with either lamb or spinach & feta, made with filo dough) It looked good.

The one thing that they really need is a source (or an oven) for fresh Turkish-style pide bread. Right now they're using Greek pita, which is OK, but hot pide would be oh so much better. That is in the future plans. Ooh, but for now they've got fresh Ayran--cold yoghurt drink. If you're used to Indian-style sweet lassi, then Ayran might be something of a surprise, as it's lightly salted. But it grows on you, and it's refreshing and delicious with a hot lamb or beef dish.

Check it out!

Cheers,
Sue
