As a recovering Yankee (from Marblehead, MA, where the fish is fresh off the boat), I can recommend Squid's without reservation, both the restaurant and the fish store. The selection in the store is limited, but always good. In the same area, Therrien's Butcher Shop has a small and constantly changing supply of high-end seafood; I saw U-10 shrimp there the other day. If you're willing to drive, try the fishmarket at the Farmer's Market in Raleigh. IIRC, they sell mostly whole fish that are very, very fresh, and will fillet, skin, etc. to order. As a general rule, you'll get the best results by ordering the fish caught locally. I wouldn't go out of my way to order cod down here, just as I wouldn't order catfish if I were in New England. Fresh Fish?
Tom Robinson's in Carrboro has the best seafood in the area. They are in a seedy little shack, open only Thurs-Sat, but the goods are always very fresh. They are always willing to recommend what is best for sashimi that day. They are located where the farmer's market used to be - sort of behind the Armadillo Grill, which is across from Carr Mill Mall. Peter G.
