The top two are Magnolia Grill and Nana's. then it's a long way down to the next. Good luck getting reservations though.

I'm not sure if it is still open, but in the vacinity of Brightleaf Square, there used to be a wonderful restaurant called Another Thyme. I always enjoyed dining there.

Further afield, in Carrboro, there was a place called The Orient Express that I enjoyed a great deal. It is in what appears to be an actual railway dining car.

If you like cow, the Angus Barn, more or less in Raleigh, near the Raleigh-Durham Airport, serves a pretty mean steak and has an astonishingly large wine list -- it comes in a *fat* three ring binder.

The best? Nana's. Others: Magnolia Grill, Parizade, and in Chapel Hill, 411 West, Mark's Cafe, Pyewacket, La Residence, and Aurora. Also, Crescent Cafe, AnotherThyme, and Niko's Taverna are worth checking out. Bakatsia's and Claire's are elegant, but I've heard that at least Claire's has folded recently.

We've never had an unpleasant time or bad food at the Pywacket. Parizade is, apparently, variable. Had really poor food at the Magnolia Grill recently.

The Angus Barn has marvelous lamb chops in addition to good beef.

Really? I was at Magnolia Grill a couple of weeks ago and had a really great dinner, as usual. What did you have?

BTW, Crooks Corner in Chapel Hill is also a wonderful place.

I am always mystified by people's reactions. Magnolia, Nanas are world-class serious restaurants, with incessant attention to detail, constant invention and a desire to actually know if something is wrong with the meal. Pyewacket is a well-intentioned but much lower tier effort. Anotherthyme does finewhen it is n't being a Magnolia wannabe. I am sitting here in Paris , throoughly enjoying the food and food shopping ; but it is hard to find food herre as good as Magnolia, or Nanas, or even Mondo Bistro or the new La REZ without almost doubling the price.

Whenever I have been to Magnolia Grill I have had the fish. It's generally perfectly cooked, medium rare in most cases. Last time I was there I had the salmon, and it was served with greens and grits which they were able to make without meat for me (I don't eat meat or shellfish). It was great. My only disappointment was that the previous time I was there I didn't order an ice cream cookie sandwich which looked great when they brought one to the table next to me (the waiter had talked me out of it). I had been looking forward to having it on my next visit but it wasn't on the menu when I was there last month.

If anyone has been to Nana's and enjoyed it can you tell me what is good there? Anyone have a menu they can FAX me? I hope to be eating there in a couple of weeks...

The Sienna hotel in Chapel Hill has a very nice restaurant. There New Year's Eve celebration is particularly nice (though I'll admit you've got quite a wait for that).
