I was scanning through the WWW pages on best places to eat in New Mexico... To my awe, everyone was talking up a storm about ABQ and Santa Fe....as if those are the only places to get authentic New Mexican/Mexican cuisine...
Allow me to mention that if you want really good Southwestern cuisine (encompassing Mexican, New Mexican food), the Las Cruces and El Paso areas are alot more CHEAPER and alot more AUTHENTIC. Having gone up to Albuquerque, I find alot of the food there is not as authentic as I have tasted in the Mesilla Valley.
First of all, places with the Tex-Mex flavor are easy to find all over the south... But I've already seen a number of Mexican
-American restaurants go out of business in Las Cruces, NM alone just because there are so many good and cheap restaurants in the area. The majority are family owned.
I shall name a few...
In the Las Cruces/Mesilla Valley area (address are found in the local phone books):
Nellie's... You want Authentic New Mexico cuisine in a homestyle kitchen atmosphere... This is the place. For $4-6$ you will be FULL. The enchiladas and flautas are excellent. And of course all sopapillas are freshly made! A must... Closed on Sun.
GO BURGERS. Yes, you heard me right... This small family owned fast food place has the best FOOT-long GREEN CHILE burritos around. Only a $1.65... Not to mention they use only real beef or pork (your preference) brisquet... None of that ground beef or shredded beef compromise... Forget the burgers... Just the burritos. The Asado (red-chile) burrito is good too. Closed on Sun.
Chopes (pronounced Cho-pez). This is in Mesilla and you really need to have reservations to go here. The restaurant is actually a large family home that basically clears itself out for customers for about 6 hours. Really delicious Mexican/New Mexican dishes and really dirt cheap prices... $4-7$. You will be full. Closed on Sun.
La Casita. Some of the best Menudo I have ever tasted. In addition, they give you great amounts for $4-$5. Their enchildas are very good as well... Closed on Sun. and Tues.
El Paso:
Lucy's. An all around great Southwestern/Mexican/New Mexican restaurant found on El Paso west-side. Prices are $6-$8.
Alexandro's. Real Authentic Mexican food right on the Mexican-US border. Extremely delicious and great atmosphere. Prices are $6-$8.
It would be a cardinal sin to mention all these quality restaurants without telling you that these are NOT the only ones. I just happen to knows these the best. In addition, if you are in the Las Cruces-El Paso area, might as well go down to Juarez, Mexico (Juarez/El Paso are basically one big city) and try REAL Mexican food. ;)
Happy Eating.

New Mexico cuisine..go SOUTH.
You are certainly correct in stating that the best texmex food comes from Tx/NM, but how could you talk about Las Cruces and Messilla without mentioning La Posta? I have been eating there for 45 years, since I was a kid, and have found it to be a marvelous example of the local cusine. I assume that you consider it too "touristy" now, and perhaps it is, but I have always had good food there. I can remember when the back door looked out on a field of chiles growing for their rellanos, but today the town is surrounding it. As you probably know, La Posta used to be a stop on the butterfield stage line and is across the street from the Billy the Kid bar. Please don't tell me that the place is now gone, or gone down? Yes, La Posta is still around. And as you may have guessed its gotten a bit more touristy... It still produces some good food (i.e. still good enchiladas, chile con queso, gorditas), but has gotten more pricey and lost some of the authenticity. I also forgot to mention La Hacienda which is also a great Mexican/New Mexican restaurant which also one first place for its dishes with green chile in the international chile festival here a few months ago. The ABQ restaurants didn't do so well... :)
: Cheers,
