[ For a frame of reference for what follows: I'm a South Indian and I'm very particular about Indian food (South or North). So much so that I end up cooking when I feel like eating Indian. :-) ] That doesn't say much, since there is practically no authentic South Indian food available in most of NYC. :-( Madras Mahal is not the real thing. The only good South Indian food I've eaten in the NY/NJ area is in a restaurant---whose name escapes me at the moment---in Edison. In fact, I'll have to grant that Indian food is one thing that NJ does better than NYC (yes, even counting Queens.) Also, if I'm not mistaken Madras Mahal has been renamed to Pongal. Don't know if they changed management and staff too, but it certainly seemed more popular than the old Madras Mahal. I was in the neighborhood recently and gave up on the idea of eating there after being told that the wait was about 45 minutes. And I've been told that the food is good. Perhaps it's worth another visit.
