Pack a lunch or go into the city. There is really nothing in the Newark area that would be worth the risk of death - from i) the cab ride, ii) the people you may run into, or iii) the restaurant you may eat at. Really. I live in general area, travel in and out of Newark all the time (a pretty good airport), and am constantly on the prowl for good places to eat.

Good luck...

There are some wonderful Portuguese restaurants in the Ironbound section of Newark. I don't know the addresses, but some of the names are:

Il Forno
Spain
Iberia
Don Pepe's

You could look them up in the phone book. I've been to all of them and had good meals at all.

Watch your time, however, depending on the time of day, traffice in and around the airport can be horrendous and you may ending up taking much more time than you can afford.

I second this suggestion. A slightly longer cab ride will take you to the Spanish Tavern on Rt. 22 in Mountainside. Same good food, but better area and ambiance. John.
