My fiance and I were visiting relatives in the New Jersey/New York area and ate at the La Capannina Inn near Montvale, NJ . We loved the food and the ambiance of the restaurant. I am told the restaurant was originally an inn. It is an elegant restaurant located about 45 minutes from NYC on the NJ/NY border. We had dinner there twice and the both times the food and service were excellent. I had the roasted red peppers and mushrooms for an appetizer and ordered the seafood fettucine. I would highly recommend both dishes. My fiance really enjoyed the mahi-mahi served with jumbo shrimp in a Cajun black bean sauce. The second time he tried the grilled swordfish. The desserts were very good but not as memorable as the entrees. Dinner for two was approximately $60 without wine.

We enjoyed the food so much that I took my parents there for lunch when we visited the New York area. My mom loved the French onion soup and the escargots appetizer.

The restaurant is in a quiet residental area northwest of NYC. Here are directions to get there: head north on the Garden State Parkway and take exit 172 (the last exit in NJ), turn right onto Grand Ave., left at light onto Spring Valley Rd., (becomes Schoolhouse Rd.). Continue past sign saying "NY 287", make right to Williams Rd., right again on Pascack Rd., and the restaurant is on the left (about 1/4 mile on Pascack).
