It is a Swiss German place run by a Cordon Blue trained chef. Unfortunately I don't have the address handy but it was right across from the train station. The restaurant is very nice and they have a very nice "Biergarten" The food is excellant and for what its worth its one of the few German restaurant I've seen in the US that make Kalbshaxe... As a "local" in the Fort Monmouth area, I have to disagree. I had an argument with the obnoxious owner (Dieter). My husband and I went there several years ago. First of all its a small place with the coat rack right by the door. The owner asked if I wanted to leave my coat by the door and I said "no thanks". We were shoved in a corner with an equally obnoxious waiter. We ordered Sauerbratten, 2 drinks each and the bill came to $80! Its not that I have never paid that much (I have and more), but the waiter had to pass our dinner to another table to pass it to us. Each drink was $6.50 each! (2 black russians and 2 budweisers). I asked the owner how he gets away with it and he said "I can do whatever I want". Even if a dinner was free there I will NEVER go there again. Also I was still hungry when I walked out of the place. Insert bad review of Little Kraut here...
I have heard similar bad stories of the Little Kraut from friends of mine who still live in Monmouth County. It's always been pricey and now it seems the food has gone to hell also.
For OK German food with a great view of the NY skyline across Sandy Hook Bay, try the Hofbrau House on the Scenic Drive between Atlantic Highlands and Highlands. The place is a lot of fun during Octoberfest. And it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the Little Kraut!
