Try the Mad Batter. It's been awhile since I've eaten there but
it was excelent and pretty reasonable. They were featured in Gourmet Magazine about a year ago.

Also there was a very good Italian place in the Shopping area but I forgot the name of it. You did need reservations because it only held 12 people at a time. It's right across from Saint Peter's (I think) Church (The church is on the list for tours as a historical landmark)

Sorry I can't be much more accurate about the italian place it's been awhile since we've been down there.

Our party of nine (including an infant) stumbled onto the Globe Restaurant in West Cape May two weeks ago. We didn't know what to make of the phrase "Global Cuisine" on the sign. Turns out it's extremely well done - there's a lot of re-invented standard cuisine (fried flounder and shoestring potatoes for our English visitors, rigatoni, salmon, crouquettes, etc.). Everyone was delighted. It's the kind of food Mom used to make, if Mom had been a member of the Chevaliers du Tastevin. If you have children, bring them early; there were a lot of kids there in the 5-8 p.m. time slot. (Children are welcome.) If you prefer a child-free atmosphere, reserve after 8:30. No liquor license; byo.

Louisa's -- On Jackson St, right off the Washington Street Mall. Great fish dishes, lots of meatless (some chicken), fresh local ingredients, different things (like curried carrot soup and smoked mackeral spread), fantastic homemade desserts. Inexpensive ($11-12 entrees). BYOB. Get there at 4:30 or 5 and eat early. It's a tiny place and it's impossible to eat there at a normal time. Closed Sundays and Mondays.

Mad Batter -- Also on Jackson Street, part of the Carroll Villa B&B, right down the road from the Mall. Nouvelle, but decent portions. Nice breakfast! Southwest touches like salsas and interesting fritters. Eat on the porch, or inside antique-filled dining room. Moderate to Expensive (15-22 an entree).

There's many more good ones, but I've not been to them-- except the Shire, they have music and nice cheeseburgers.
