Dim Sum

There is a Chinese restaurant on the west side of Lindbergh Boulevard, just north of the intersection of Lindbergh Boulevard and McDonnell Boulevard, adjacent to the old McDonnel-Douglas office campus.

During the week, the restaurant runs a buffet for the Boeing crowd, but on Saturdays they offer dim sum instead of the buffet. Most of the clientele for the dim sum is oriental and most of the wait staff pushing the dim sum carts from table to table did not speak English. I don't know if dim sum is offered on Sunday, too.

There isn't any place to get decent dim sum in ST. Louis. The DIM SUM at China Royal is disgusting slop. Greasy, no taste morsels prepared for people who don't know what real dim sum is. Although many years ago it was fair, the same cannot be said today. My advice is stay far away. Speaking of food in St. Louis, the person who does the resturant reviews for the Post Dispatch ( the only local paper here) doesn't know the difference between a dog turd and a hamburger. Directions to DIM SUM in St. Louis.. take Southwest Airlines to Chicago. FC

The place on Page which has dim sum on weekends is Eat First Garden. It's an inauspicious name, but the one time I tried it, I thought it was good and very authentic.

I first brought up the place on Page. The one I was referring to was Hunan Garden. I have visited Eat First and found the food unpalatable - it looked and tasted like it was weeks old. They may improved since I last visited a year ago (that wouldn't have taken much, believe me) but it is not a place I care to visit again. The name is probably right, come to that.

That must be Hunan Garden? Yesterday at work, I attempted to call China Royal (or whatever it is) and found they have no listing in the Yellow Pages. While I was muttering, my cube mate, a Mr. Lin, ask me what the problem was. When I told him I was trying to find out if China Royal served Dim Sum on Sunday, he said, "Yes, they do, but don't go there - many much better places for Dim Sum in Saint Louis." (Did I mention he is Chinese?)

He then recommended I try Hunan Garden on Page or Great Chef Garden on Manchester at 141. My current plan is to check out Great Chef Garden tomorrow...

There seems to be more dim sum in this area than I realized. I tried one of Mr. Lin's recommendations last weekend - the Great Chef Garden on Manchester. It's really a buffet with dim sum goodies, and the price is nice (about $8/person). I thought the food was good, but I know there are people here that will disagree...

The place on Page he mentioned is Hunan Garden. I asked him about Eat First Garden, and commented that I thought it was an odd name (suggesting a person should eat before visiting there). He laughed and explained it to me.. but never did comment on the food.

Somehow I missed your mention of Hunan Garden.. my loss. Oh well, I went there today and was very pleased. The food was great and a decent assortment. There should be something there to please anyone. We got there a few minutes before 11 am, and got seated quickly, but there was a waiting list when we left. Be advised. ;-) Oh yeah, we "pigged out" and left feeling stuffed. The bill was $22 for the two of us.

I'm not in a real hurry to try Eat First or China Royal, but would return to Hunan Garden or Great Chef Garden any weekend
