i lived there for a few years, moved a year and a half ago, so i might be a little out of date. favorites were:

le tegarden ‹ french/vietnamese. delicious. inexpensive at lunch. mary mahoney's ‹ an INSTITUTION. there are two parts ‹ the main restaurant is fairly upscale, quite good, and what you might think of as typical gulf coast food. there's also a 24-hour cafe with omelets, beignets, wonderful biscuits (when they have them), and po boys. vrazel's ‹ very nice atmosphere with huge windows and good service.

also, you might want to visit ocean springs. there's a nice cafe there for lunches ‹ i forget the name ‹ but also, it's just a fun town to hang around in. the walter anderson museum is nice, there are some great gift shops and galleries, and there's a truly fabulous toy store with the most interesting items. it's run by a very sweet older couple ‹ they're very into the toys, and it's just a delight.

feel free to e-mail more with any other questions.

Well there are many good restaurants in the area. I'd stay away from most of the Casino buffets. They are really not worth it1

In Ocean Springs, try Marth's Tea Room for lunch and Bankok House for lunch and dinner. Moving east to Biloxi, I hear thet McElroy's on the beach is still pretty good. There is a German Rest. called Keppner's also on the Beach and I usually enjoy the sausages there. Toward Gulfport is a place called the Blow Fly Inn, a real hole in the wall but with great steaks. In Gulfport Vrzels(sp?) across from the Grand Casino is excellent and the service is good. For Italian and local recipes, Amelia's in Long Beach is great... the shrimp po-boy and steak and cheese are favorite. Amelia is from Boston but has a good southern touch and there is a nice jazz dou on weekends. Chappy's can be very nice and he does cajun well, Don't miss the desserts! Moving west in Pass Christian is The Blue Rose, an older home filled with antiques and a nice bar and fine dining. My hometown, Bay St. Louis boasts the best undiscovered jewel on the coast...Carole's Olde Towne Restaurant. Carole (from New England) and her partner Mary (from Lafayette, La) have the best breakfast and lunch (they are closed for dinner) around...Banana's Foster pancakes and shrimp omelets and homemade Boudin every Sunday until noon. Lunch specials include red beans and rice with homemade andoille and tasso, and the best pan fried catfish around! Also Mary's gumbo is to die for! A friendly place too and not real expensive. You may even get me to serve you...all the regulars serve when it gets busy. After your meal explore the town and stop in the Dock of the Bay for a drink and a great burger...The owner used to sing with Blood, Sweat and Tears. In Waveland you'll need reservations for Jacks on Colemen Ave. Fantastic Steaks and crabmeat combos and I love the pie. Little Rays on Hwy 90 in Waveland has boiled crawfish and good po-boys and if Ray is there he'll come out and chat.

Enjoy all this and move on thru Slidell (maybe stop at Young's for steaks) and down to New Orleans...

Check the listings for N.O. and then eat your way there. Hope this helps!
