Christophers is a pretty ok place. Nothing terribly exciting, but pretty inexpensive & everything is pretty well prepared with good ingredients, like burgers & a few texmex things like nachos. My favorite thing is that they have Cambridge Brewing Co.s pale ale on tap & usually something from the Modern Brewer too, like their excellent Fat Cat ESB. Cottonwood is towards the other end of the scale. Not texmex but nouveu Southwestern--stuff you might get at a pricey Santa Fe restaurant. Pretty tasty & not too pretentious. Kinda nearby is the Forest Cafe aka Mexican Cuisine if you want something closer to authentic Mexican. I am a regular at Christophers, mostly because I just like the place as a place and like some of the other regulars and people who work there. The food, on the other hand, just isn't so great nowadays. Check out the fries, for example, which are *always* burnt. I share your love for Cambridge Pale, however. > Cottonwood is towards the other end of the scale. Not texmex but nouveu > Southwestern--stuff you might get at a pricey Santa Fe restaurant. I'd recommend it. > Kinda nearby is the Forest Cafe aka Mexican Cuisine if you want something > closer to authentic Mexican. No, no, no! I used to love this place back when Jim Fahey owned it. I went back recently, and it was swill. They shouldn't even call it by the same name; it's like false advertising. > > I do like Tamarind House, the newish Thai restaurant, and the Indian place > > is alright for lunches. Tamarind is a great Thai place. The Indian's not bad. Try the Korean deli next door for take-out or eat-in - I love their food and get it all the time. OK, other places. Have you tried Elephant Walk, up the street? It's fantastic. A little upscale on the prices, but well worth it and a great wine list to boot. Love it. I've mostly gotten the Cambodian food. Across the street from there is the Porterhouse Cafe, a rib joint. Kind of the same setup as the Forest - townie bar coupled with restaurant. (Fahey used to own it too, in fact). It's OK. I kind of prefer Redbones for it's atmosphere. If you head back towards Harvard Square, you run into the West Side Lounge near the Forest Cafe. I had one great meal there. It's fairly pricey - in the high teens/ low 20s. We tried to go back, but ran into some bullshit attitude from the hostess about reservations and left. Be forewarned about that. Close by there's the Changsho for Szechuan. Not bad. They make things a little sugary, for my taste. Further down towards Harvard is Chez Henri, of course. Doubtless the priciest option. I do like the food - it's a little overrated though. Has a small bar with lots of attitude where supposedly cool people hang out. The service is usually good. Across the street is Cambridge Common, a spin-off of Christopher's with better food and flakier service. I go there a lot for a relatively cheap meal. There are several pizza places as well. I'm sure I've forgotten something else. Dave
