There is a small town in the hills above Florence called Fie Sole (Feeyay Solay). It is a short and very pleasant busride from the center of Florence. Fie Sole is a small tourist town, with shops, galleries, musical events, and, of course, gelati shops. From the town square, the view of Florence at dusk is really lovely. Across the square from where the bus enters used to be (we visited 4 years ago) a small basement pizza place. We ate thin delicious, inexpensive thin-crusted pizza with fresh vegetable toppings. We also ate so-so pasta. We sat at large tables with people who spoke no English (we speak no Italian) and we had a blast. We strolled about town in the evening, and watched the lights come on in Florence. Even if this pizza place is not there anymore, there's probably another spot in Fie Sole that's just great.

If you go to Firenze, definitely eat at Osteria del Cinghiale Bianco, the White Boar. Stone ceilings, white walls, candles, and the warmth and friendliness of an Inn--very romantic--and the food is incredible. Try the ravioli nudi (naked ravioli--cheese and spinach balls that are sublime) and try the rustic Tuscan dishes and good wine. I ate Cinghiale with polenta--wild boar in hearty red sauce over corn meal mush--and for the less adventuresome, there are plenty of wonderful pasta dishes and antipasti available. A wonderful experience.
Cinghiale Bianco is on Borgo San Jacopo, across the Ponte Vecchio from
the old part of town, on the south side of the Arno.
    Don't miss it!
