It's pepper-encrusted beef topped with Stilton cheese and roasted garlic on a pumpernickel bun. The beer isn't bad, either.

Where can I get a good hamburger?

I live right around the corner from Jury's and you are SO right. And that applies to their whole menu- when they get it right, you just can't believe they're in the 'hood. And even when they miss it's no worse than average- so for the money it's generally worth it. You will generally have to tolerate a wait, though. trent
Russ,
There is still a Hackney's in Lake Zurich on Route 12. Very good burgers and great onion loaf as well!

Lion's Tap 2. The Gold Nugget 3. Matt's Bar 4. The 5-8 Club Has anyone tried these in Minnesota and then found ANYTHING in Chicago that compares favorably?? I've tried, but I haven't. I would love to get the scoop on some similarly tasty burgers around here.

I've been to Lion's Tap and didn't get what the big deal was. I agree that a burger can be a remarkably subjective thing (although I suspect that there would be some consensus on which places to avoid). It depends on what you're looking for in a burger. Personally, I like the greasy, drippy kind. 'Gourmet' is not an adjective that should EVER be applied to a burger, IMO. One of my personal favorites is Pepper's on Van Buren in the Loop. The spartan atmosphere is exquisitely charming in it's simplicity. The floor tiles are worn through two layers where the customer line forms (oftentimes out the door). There is a counter facing the window equipped with barstools and salt shakers, but I consider it strictly a take-out place. The hard-working Asian couple behind the counter put out a mighty fine product - he braves the flames of the char-grill while she takes orders and assembles the burgers. In a strange sort of way, there are aspects of the place that sort of remind me of the Soup Nazi, but without the bite. You stand in line (which can get quite long during the lunch rush). When your turn comes, you say, in a voice loud enough so as not to have to repeat yourself, "double cheeseburger with everything and fries". She will say "hot peppers?", you say "yes" and hand her $4.25, tax included. I suspect that any departure from this slows things down considerably. This, truly, is a 'Burger' (say it with a growl in your voice)

You know, I've been there twice and each time thought the burgers only "adequate" but nothing too special. On the north side, served for lunch and late night only, Myron & Phil's has the best burger around by far. Further north in the burbs or downtown, try any location of Boston Blackie's.

But if you're in the area, try Ron's Place. 3301 52nd St; 52nd St is also Highway 158 which has an exit off of I-94/US-41. Primo excellent burgers, thick and fresh. Served on buns or foccacia bread, with a variety of fresh toppings available. Good fries too; various beers on tap. If you sit at the bar you can watch your order being cooked. Warning: G. B. Packers memorabilia abounds. On the next block east (practically next door) is Tenuta's, Italian grocery with made-to-order sandwiches in the summertime. Another reason to cross the border. --MLW

Also, Twisted Spoke on Ogden is pretty good. Especially upstairs outside in the summer. humble U. wrote: >If Superdawg's burgers are anything like their hotdogs then I'll pass. > >-- > > |^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^||_________ > | Miller Lite || |__\__ > |_...__...______________||_|__|..=] > "(@)'(@)""""""""""*|(@)*(@)***(@) > > >Bob H. wrote: >> Plenty of good places around... >> Alumni Club >> Taylor Street Brewing Co >> Country House (Clarendon Hills I think) >> Hackney's (haven't been in 20 years but my memory says they were good) >> Houston's >> Superdawg >> >> Also, check out www.metromix.com .
