Suggestions for a (relatively) cheap date place--North Side...
As a fellow poor northwestern grad student.... I assume you would be looking for place on the northside/evanston-ish: Dave's Italian Kitchen (Evanston): Whenever I eat there on a date, I feel like I'm in the movie "Lady and the Tramp." (and yes, that is often a good thing) Annam Cafe (Evanston): pretty good Vietnamese food and close. BYOB. Heartland Cafe (Roger's Park): More causal. Safe if your date happens to be vegetarian. They usually have live music and they have a good selection of beer. If the weather is nice, you can sit outside. Ethiopian (my fav is Mama Desta's on Belmont): Fun since most of the food is family style. Make sure your date is food adventurous though. I've known a lot of people that hate the bread and that ruins it for them. Dellwood Pickle (on Balmoral in Andersonville): Good inexpensive food (american type, good blackened catfish and the beans or other green they serve w/ it are always outstanding). Interesting art on the walls. BYOB. Penny's Noodle Shop (Diversey or Roscoe): well, you asked for inexpensive. BYOB. Bistro 1800/My Bar (Evanston): It is a bit expensive for dinner, but if you eat in Evanston, it would be a good place to go for drinks/dessert. The live jazz makes for a nice evening where you can actually talk to your date occasionally (unlike a movie). Cafe Iberico (LaSalle and Chicago): Spanish tapas. I think the best tapas for the $$. Good sangria and it is pretty cheap. Also, alot of these are from a book I picked up called "Cheap Chow Chicago". I think I got it at the WTTW store in Watertower. A good book for poor students who like to try new places to eat. Anybody have other suggestions? Please post them! As much as I love to read about tru and the other fancy places, I can always use suggestions for cheap food! Nice food, not bad prices, but hardly romantic. One place I've always wanted to take a date is Villa Kula, open lunch and dinner (and late, midnight on weekends) at 4718 North Lincoln (e.g. Lincoln Square). Eclectic food, over twenty teas, quiet, warm ambience. Caf Selmarie two blocks away is better for dessert, tho. -PC > Penny's Noodle Shop (Diversey or Roscoe): > well, you asked for inexpensive.
