Well, it would help to know what part of town you'll be in and what variety of Chinese you like, but you can't go wrong with

Szechwan East
312/255-9200
340 E. Ohio St.
Chicago, IL 60611

Chef Xiao-Jun Hu is a relatively recent immigrant from mainland China, brought over by the genial owner, Alfred Hsu. The food is not always authentic, but it's always very good.

usually, good chinese food and a good atmosphere is an oxy-moron. for authentic szechuan chinese, try this place in chinatown: Mandarin Chef, 2172 Archer Ave. 312 326.5040.

for others: a new Cantonese restaurant opened up in Westmont (west suburbs) which serves pretty good dimsum off route 83 south and Ogden - can't remember the name. they replaced a pretty good szechuan restuarant there which was named 4 Rivers.

Szechwan East sucks. I have been in Chicago 6 months & have yet to find high quality Chinese here. I live very close to this place and tried it very quickly when I got here, and I was just as quickly disappointed.

I have tried many Chinese places besides this, including all the recommended ones, & have been continually disappointed. Maybe this is because I lived in NYC, a place that actually has excellent Chinese food, and I've been able to tell the difference due to my perspective!

If you ever need to drive to Ann Arbor or Detroit, stop in Portage/Kalamazoo Michigan at exit 76 and go to PEKING PALACE.

This place has got to be the best chinese restaurant in the Midwest. Nothing in Chicago can compare to it. I've lived in Chicago for 10 years and have not found any place even remotely close to the quality of the food there.

Of course the drive is about 2.5 hours from Chicago but heck, they have some nice bed and breakfast places there.
