For Indian, I'd recommend Viceroy of India for nonvegetarian food. Their $6.95 all-you-can-eat lunch deal, which I think is offered only on weekends, is spectacular, and includes a wide variety of hot and cold dishes and desserts. It's also good for dinner. For vegetarian, the best in Chicago is Udupi palace. Their "complete meal" deals are wonderful. Both of these restaurants are on Devon Avenue up north, and are about a block apart.

As for the chi-chi places I've been to Seasons, Charlie Trotter's, the old Le Francais, and Everest. The best of these was the old Le Francais, but I haven't been to its new incarnation under the original owner. The other three were, in my opinion, overpriced, especially for the amount of food one gets. Charlie Trotter's (at which I've eaten three times) is, I think, the most overrated expensive restaurant in Chicago, although most would disagree with me. I would prefer one of the local French-style Bistros, such as Kiki's or the Bistro Margot, where one can have an excellent meal at a less-than-stratospheric price (Kiki's also has a bring-your-own wine feature, which, including corkage fee, is still cheaper than buying your own wine).
