Hi, Everyone:

My wife and I just returned from a business trip to Chicago. We tried a relatively new place called Savannah's. We had an excellent time and want to share this news with the group.

Savannah's is at 1100 W Grand, so it's a bit out of downtown (about a $5-6 cab from the Sheraton Chicago). The cooking style is South Carolina-low country. We had experienced this cuisine in a trip to Seabrook Island and really enjoyed it. Savannah's reminded me of that. The menu was quite varied and the food we had (ranging from a shrimp and grits appetizer to pork and chicken entrees) was fresh, very well prepared.

The decor was rather simple, like a city bistro. It was not a particularly upscale place, but rather felt more like a neighborhood cafe. Quite comfortable and relaxed. In places like this, the service is sometimes as easy going as the decor, but the Savannah's people delivered excellent service. They were friendly, quick, and efficient.

We each had a glass of wine, shared an appetizer and a dessert, and had regular entrees. The bill came to about $70.

The largest criticism I can offer is location. If you're staying near the lake, Savannah's is a way's out and not in an especially nice neighborhood. You probably wouldn't enjoy a walk after dinner before you pick up a taxi. However, getting there and back is no trouble (they also have valet service).

All in all Savannah's is an excellent place and is now on our list of favorite Chicago places (along with Printer's Row and Bistro 110).
