Go to Michael Foley's Printers' Row, in the financial district ( I think that's the area - I don't know Chicago well at all, and we ate there on a Sunday night after a 2 day stay - I would at least call it "downtown"..) He is a splendid cook with a lot of imagination, basically nouvelle American for lack of better, who built the place from a hole in the wall to an institution. I highly recommend it. Also, there is a new place in Winnetka called Trio that we did not have time to get to, but that I understand is very good fusion-type cooking. George

The most widely known and perhaps the best in the city is Shaw's Crab House on Hubbard street downtown and on Lake-Cook Rd. in Deerfield. German: I love German food. I've had it everywhere, and I must admit that Chicago's is fantastic. There are three incredible sources for the best in German gastronomie- 1)Zum Deutschen Eck-off Belmont downtown 2)The Golden Ox-on Clybourn and North Ave. downtown 3)The Berghoff-Food's o.k., atmosphere's fantastic. On Adams and State downtown Traditional American: Too many to mention them all, but- 1)Moosehead bar and grill-downtown 2)Morton's Steak House 3)Chicago Chop House 4)Harry Carey's 5)Geno's - if you consider Chicago Stuffed Pizza traditional American. I consider myself more versed with the different ethnic sections and cuisines of the city. If you'd like other suggestions or would like to comment on my recommendations, you know where to find me...
