Soul Kitchen at the corners of Damen/North/Milwaukee has real good cajun food.
Ambiance is very loud and very "Hip" though...
No wait a minute, last time I was there the waiter tried to slip an extra $60.00 on the credit card bill when running the authorization. Credit card slip was $60 higher than bill. When we called him on it he didn't even wait to hear why we called him, just grabbed the check and said, "Oh here, I'll take care of that" That's why I haven't been there in a while. Damn, I liked their food and Martinis too... Stay away from there. Oh well, there's Dixie Kitchen in Evanston and (i Think) Hyde Park.

Joe's Be-Bop Cafe on Navy Pier has pretty decent food. Real good BBQ. And live music every night.

In Evanston there's a GREAT place called Old Orleans. They have live music on Friday and Saturday, I think one night is the Evanston High School Jazz Band. The food is delicious, and portions are huge. This is NOT low fat cuisine, it is how the cook's mom did it at home, so chicken is on the bone, etc.

(and I disagree with the review, I liked the Jambalaya better than the Etouffe :)

It definitely seemed like a place where kids would be welcome - I think they had crayons on the tables?
