In general, I haven't found a Polish Buffet style place that is REALLY good, except for Lone Tree, which is up Milwaukee Ave., north of Touhy. And even there, it can be hit or miss. Last week, the potato pancakes were great, and the meat pierogi were tasty. The stuffed cabbage is always way too much rice and not enough beef. Other times, the potato pancakes have been greasy and limp, and the pierogi are often tough. Unless you just want to have a "carb-fest", avoid the Polish buffets, and go to Orbit (Milwaukee and Central Park), or try the Congress restaurant and bar at Milwaukee and Belmont. Haven't been in a few years, but it's very authentic, and pretty damned much like grandma made. Also, Staropolska is a good bet as well.

Haven't been there for a while, but I've enjoyed Podhalanka, on the south side of Division just east of Ashland. Outside, it looks like a bucket-of-blood bar. Inside, it looks like the bar's been cleaned up with a few slapdash attempts at decor. But the food is/was homestyle, ample, and amazingly cheap. I haven't seen many customers, service may be by the owner, and it's leisurely. Podhalanka 1549 West Division Street Chicago (312) 486-6655

I can't speak to the authenticity, but I find it as good if not better than the Red Apple(s) (and I like the Red Apple considerably more than some who have responded). Again, don't hold me to any authenticity requirements - I just know it's damned good (and they have great beets in the cold portion of the buffet). I've been there only a few times, but loved each visit. And it's a funky room - it was obviously a fifties swanky dinner/dance club at one point, so it's got a character all its own. There's one on Archer near Pulaski (?) and another one in Willowbrook. the selection is huge and the quality is pretty good. I don't go to very many Polish buffets, but Bobak's seems to be the best. They also have a deli/supermarket at each location and make their own sausage, etc. Dave
