It's in Skokie, in a little strip mall at 3560 W. Dempster. I just started working in the area, so I spend my half-hour lunchtime hoofing around, checking out the local eats and saw this place yesterday: Eastern Style Pizza. Went in and had a slice, and was very pleasantly surprised. Nice, small little place...clean & well lit. Plenty of tables, 2 video-game tables (!), newspapers and magazines to read. The place has been there 30 years--owners are originally from Philly, so they have cheese steaks and grinders, too. For a slice, they cut a 16 inch pizza into 6 slices--perfect for a light lunch. Good prices--cheese only slice is $1.65, one ingredient $1.85 and a 2 ingredient slice is $2.05. Yesterday was the first time I had a NY style slice, and it was very good eating. Not much difference, ingredients-wise, from what I'm used to here in Chicago except better quality sausage than I've seen lately. But the crust was wonderful--thick enough at the edge to hold the fold, so your hands stay clean & dry. Went back today for another slice. I don't know their hours, but they have a website: <www.easternstylepizza.com> If you don't have a ride, the #250 PACE bus runs right by it.

While not a NYC native I did work there for several months and this reminds me of the their local pizza. says... > > Last month somebody asked about finding a NY style pizza place in > Chicago, and I found one, sort of. Dempster. <snip> I hope it's a far sight better than New York Pizza on Lawrence just west of Damen, which was recommended a month or so ago. I tried a slice of cheese right out of the oven and found it lacking. My main issue with the pizza was the quality of the cheese, or should I say cheese product. The cheese had a rubbery texture and bland flavor that can only be found in the cheapest of cheese. The other problem with the cheese was that as soon as it cooled just a bit it became almost inedible, it reminded me of chewing on a rubber band, I ended up tossing about half the slice. The place was clean, the counterman friendly and the pizza hot and fresh, it just did not taste good. Enjoy, Gary

Michael, Glad you enjoy the pizza at the Lawrence NY pizza shop, it's possible I simply do not have an appreciation for that style of pizza. Enjoy, Gary NY Pizza 1/8 block West of Damen on the North side of the street.
