I just moved from Chicago to DC so I read your request with interst. > I grew up in Evanston (60's) and am planning a trip back this fall. I'm > wondering if some of my old, favorite haunts are still around? They would > be: > In Evanston: > Yesterdays > The Huddle > The Hut > Orrington Hotel ******* Still there > The Inferno > (Anyone remember B&G's? :-) > Chicago: > Uno's/Due ******* Very much still there. Always a wait on Fri/Sat. Garlic bread is the best and pizza- well, they now have the chain. > La Creperie > The Victorian House > Fish Keg > Gold Coin ******* The only "Gold Coin" that I know of are these "Diners" that grandparents frequent. > Also, can anyone tell me how long ago it was that they tore down the > Wiebolts building and is Smithfield's out of business? > Thanks, > Jill Other places to go, if you are interested- Fondue: Geja's @ Lincoln and Armitage. (from maincourse to chocolate)_ Prime Rib: Houstans in the Lennoz house- for the $$ very good; if you want to spend too much $$ you can go to Lawry's Chinese: Jade Garden on 224X S. Wentworth. They have a honey garlic fried shrimp that is out of this world! Don't let the emptiness fool you. Dancing/Drinking: America's Bar 211 W. Erie (25-40) good people dancing on walls and bartops. Responsibly irresponsible.

Evanston/Chicago Eats
Lived in Chicago in high school, first year of grad school, return to see family rather regularly. In truth have had very few poor restaurant meals there and have not been able to scratch the surface of what I want to do. Several places we routinely go back to include: Walker Bros. Original Pancake House, Greenbay Road, Wilmette. Always a wait on weekends, usually a wait on weekday mornings until 10:00 but the best of this ilk I've ever found- baked apple pancakes (share with somebody); German pancakes puffed to perfection, and more varieties than you can imagine. Take-out at Con Vito Italiano- Sheridan Road in Plaza Del Lago. Many others- which you'll find.
I was a student at Northwestern in the early 80's. Walker Brothers was definitely my place of choice for Sunday morning breakfasts and late night sugar fixes. There is nothing like a huge oven baked apple pancake and seven cups of coffee to really get your juices flowing in the morning. Just the thought of it is enough to set me buzzing around my apartement. Other places my cohorts and I used to frequent were Dave's Italian Kitchen, Carmines, the Gold Coin (on Howard Street, open 24 hours) and of course Sherman's coffee shop. Do any of these places still exist? david

Do any of these places still exist? The Cold Groin is still there, but Howard Street has gotten pretty spooky lately. La Chosa got more and more toxic, and I think they are gone now. Dave's is still around. The Sherman Coffee Shop (not Sherman's) was the B&G in my day. We called it the Barf&Gag. I enjoyed its menu (not its food). My favorite items were the French cuisine: "Tuna ala Cheese" and the remarkably redundant "Beef with Au Jus Sauce". Yesterday's is remarkably unchanged since the 70's. The Big Pickle has gone through innumerable reincarnations and is now some sort of southwestern dive. The big change is that there are now much better places to eat. The little Mexican joint on Sherman near Dempster is an amazing simulation of a restaurant that's been there forever, and except for the vile guacamole, is terrific. There's a great little Thai place, and the hot dog joint on Davis is now a Dim Sum place. Yum! However, the distinctive little-old-lady feel that once was Evanston is vanishing. I never expected I'd miss it, but Chandler's and Hoos Drugs are gone, the Marshall Fields is a mini-mall, and the whole downtown has turned into Starbuck's City. Why go anywhere any more? mt
>Someone wrote: >And don't forget Mandarin House on Noyes. Ooh! Ooh! If you're in Chicago, you've also got to go to Arun's!! This is the best Thai food I've ever had (on the gourmet side). Warning, it's not a cheap restaurant..... Olga
