The Dixie Kitchen and Bait Shop opened last week at 825 Church Street in Evanston. It's owned by the same folks who have the DKBS on South Harper, and much of what's offered there is offered in Evanston - lucky for the folks up north.

Among the appetizer offerings are fried green tomatoes, crawfish fritters, and fried oysters. Main courses available include sandwiches (po' boys, pulled pork, and burgers) as well as more substantial entrees (catfish, gumbo, jumbalaya). There are also several salad selections available.

The dessert menu includes banana foster (excellent!), cobblers, bread pudding, and pecan pie. Great coffee makes a perfect compliment.

The Evanston location has a liqour license, and a full line of beers, wines, and spirits are for sale.

One of the nicest parts of having dinner here is the warm, friendly, and prompt service. Mark (manager/owner?) sets the tone with a cordial greeting when you walk in, and the other members of the staff take their service cue from him. Water glasses are kept full. Orders are brought to the table promptly. Everyone seems genuinely pleased you decided to join them for dinner.

It's quibbling, but I suggest you avoid the "country gravy" which features dill and sage - two spices I don't recall running into in New Orleans and which I would have liked not to have discovered here. Also, parking in front can be a bit of a pain, but there is ample free parking available in the city garage about one half block away (assuming you are in and out in about an hour).

All in all, this place looks like a strong entry into the Evanston eatery scene. I know I'll be back!

Ate there tonight before the Bulls game.......wait staff needs training but the food was wonderful---same as the south side.

Staff was somewhat clumsy, but well intentioned.

**I** predict they will be a booming success!

Their food is unique, wonderful in taste and presentation and priced right.

Further I further divine, they will outgrow their present location in a very short time.
