I've never had a bad meal at Naniwa (607 N. Wells), but I wouldn't call it a very fancy place. Same for Shiroi Hana, Sai Cafe, and the Moonie-owned Akai Hana (good food and next door to the Sea Ranch, fresh fish market).

The web sites I use most frequently to find Sushi restaurants in Chicago:

Actually, the best place for sushi is not in the city. It's at Renga-Tei on Touhy & Crawford (Pulaski) in Lincolnwood. The Japanese sushi chef moved there after he closed up the restaurant he owned with his wife (now passed away). Their restaurant was on Elston just north of Bryn Mawr. My mom loves their sashimi & she's Japanese. Renga-Tei is currently closed for expansion & is supposed to open within the next week or so. The former decor was somewhat plain like Matsuda's, but the price & quality is much better. Call (847) 675-5177 for when they will be re-opening.

If you like circuses in presenting your sushi, then go to Kampai in Mt. Prospect (2330 S. Elmhurst Rd). They present your sushi on little boats that float around for you to pick them up.
