Suggestions for Sushi

There is a place in the Chicago area that I go to. It is actually located in Arlington Heights. The place is called Yaohan Plaza. It is actually a Japanese market, but there are a lot of other things in the building from a book store to a sushi restaurant. The prices are rather inexpensive from what I know of.

It is located in Arlington Heights at Arlington Heights Road and Algonquin Road.

Another place that I like is Matsuya, on Clark Street near Wrigley Field. I think that it is on the 3500 block of Clark.

No, you're remembering it correctly. Yaohan is a decent source for ingredients of all sorts, and pickles, and strange crackers, and even stranger candy, and so on... but the prepared sushi is only fresh at lunch time, and then gets marked down at about 6:30PM (they close at 8).

It's mall food... you wouldn't expect it to be as good as food in a "real" restaurant. Or, at least, I wouldn't.

We were there 3 weeks ago and it is still great (and cheap). I actually didn't eat sushi (the bf and mum did) but had a meal with the most sublimely luscious piece of cooked saba (mackerel) I've ever had the pleasure of eating, and it's something I've eaten many times. It came with salad, miso soup, a bowl of rice and a piece of fruit for $6. My mum insists on going every time she comes to visit. It's worth the trek from Chicago.

Well I have to recommend to you then, Tomboy in Andersonville, at about Balmoral and Clark. The chef there does an outstanding grilled Tuna encrusted with Sesame seed, and served with a grilled vegetable and Wasabe Mashed potatoes.

It's wonderful and the tuna is just like butter, melts in your mouth!!!

It's been a while since I moved away, but I used to find Yaohan quite useful as a source of ingredients and tools, but their sushi was pretty mediocre and not all that inexpensive, and I lost interest in it altogether after I discovered Sea Ranch about a mile north and a bit east (N on AH Road to Golf, east a couple lights to "the mansions" IIRC; they're in that little strip mall between the apartments and Golf). Uhm, wait: are you saying Yaohan has a proper sushi restaurant now? Back then they had only packaged sushi (made up around lunch time for sale the rest of the day). And that Oriental food court area.
