I've heard, from two serious and respected New York cooks, that Charlie Trotter can provide an exceptional meal.

Charlie Trotter's is a Mobil 5-star restaurant. The food may be good, but be warned, the prices are strastopheric and you'll almost certainly need advance reservations. Also, the restaurant is in Lincoln Park, so it might be a bit off the beaten path for someone staying in the Loop or North Michigan Ave.

I thought for awhile to think of which, among the many, many excellent downtown restaurants I really like, are the ones I really love. I may be forgetting someone, but among those I really love (and they are certainly accessible) are: Farrago at 733 N. Wells (312-951-7350), Gene & Georgetti at 500 N. Franklin (312-527-3718), and Trattoria No. 10 at 10 N. Dearborn (312-984-1718) are the first that come to mind. But I also have a great soft spot for the strangely-named Cape Cod Room in the Drake Hotel at 140 East Walton Place (312-787-2200). The food in the Four Seasons Hotel at 120 E. Delaware Place (312-280-8800) is, of course, superb. I would also strongly recommend, for the food, the music (check time), and just how it looks, The Marc at 311 W. Superior (312-642-3810). Also, Rick Bayless' Topolobampo at 455 N. Clark really is unusual and shouldn't be missed (312-661-1434) Finally, although it's only open for lunch, the restaurant in the Art Institute on Michigan Ave., overlooking the park, is wonderful.
Have a great time. You almost can't miss!

A few that I would add to this list:

Gordon at 500 N Clark
Printer's Row ? S Dearborn?
Cafe BaBaReBa about 2000 N Halstead
Blackhawk Lodge (somewhere on west superior?)
Shaw's Crab House (west Hubbard)

Have fun,
