For Indian cuisine, go north of downtown. On Devon Ave., between west of Ridge and east of California Ave are many restaurants, markets, and specialty shops. The Viceroy is pretty good, and usually appears to have lots of Indians frequenting it. This place specializes in northern style, mostly tandoors and masalas. Another place that is very popular with Indians is Udipi Palace, specializing in southern Indian cuisine. Their specialty is dosais (sp?) and other rice/lentil type filled pancakes. Across the street is greasy spoon called Bundo Kahn's (sp?), my husband tells me it is popular with Indian cab drivers. My favorite is Moti Mahal on Devon. Not always filled up with Indians per se but still ranks in my book as one of the better Indian restuarants. They served a pretty good lamb pasanda, a spicy creamy dish, and also have one of the better lunch buffets.

For Italian try 2400 S. Oakley. There are about ten (maybe more) small restaurants in a small Italian community. It is kind of hidden and off of the busy streets so you may have trouble finding it. Of course a cab driver will always know if you have an address.

Our favorite (although they are all good) is Bacchanalia.
