      Try Topolombampo. Rick Bayless, the chef there, was just recently
      awarded the top american chef award (the "culinary oscar") for 1994-
      1995.

      Topolombampo (and the adjacent Frontera Grill..) will change your
      perception of Mexican cuisine. It is an unbelievable experience
      for someone (like myself) who grew up thinking mexican food
      consisted of velveeta laden burritos, tacos, and enchiladas.

      As for "great german food", having lived both in Germany and
      Milwaukee for most of my life, it is somewhat of a contraadiction
      in terms, IMO...except for the fabulous desserts.

      Another terrific place in Chicago is called Tuscany.

      Good luck.

These are my favorite German restaurants in Chicago:

Zum Deutschen Eck 2924 N. Southport (312) 525-8121 The Berghoff            17 W. Adams St.         (312) 427-3170 Chicago Brauhaus  4732 N. Lincoln Ave.    (312) 784-4444

If you want to venture into suburbia...

Black Forest      1129 N. Roselle Rd, Hoffman Estates (708) 882-5822 Fritzl's    900 Ravinia Terrace, Lake Zurich    (708) 540-8844

                        Enjoy...

Looking for the name of a "great German restaurant" in Chicago, which everyone raves about but no one can think of the name of it. I'll be in Chicago next week and would like to try it. What else is "great" in Chicago?

AS PER OTHER CHOICES,try Albert's Cafe and Patisserie 52 West Elm (near Dearborn). 5-10 min walk from Michigan Ave. Small but the food is excellent and reasonably priced. Just had a veal stew over fettucini as a dinner special. Try their deserts. Geja's (a fondue place) was different and intimate. You can't throw a rock in Chicago without hitting a decent restaurant but the good ones seem to be small and unpretentious. Enjoy your stay.

I consider myself a fan of the Berghoff. But 'one of the best restaurants downtown (or anywhere in town.)'???? Not even close. It's not even the best German rest. in town. The Berghoff provides an excellent value; good food at reasonable prices in an interesting setting. The best German restaurants in Chicago to me are:
1) Mork's Heidleberger Fass
2) Zum Deutchen Eck
These are the 2 that really stand out, IMO.
Now for 'best restaurants downtown', to name just a few and omit many:
* Everest
* Gordon
* Charlie Trotter's
* Cape Cod Room
* Vivere
* Hard Rock Cafe (just kidding!)

Chicago is a great restaurant town -- it all depends on what you like.

Buy a copy of Chicago Magazine - full restaurant section org'd by type & location. Avoid the in-hotel mags. The N. Halsted Street area is a good strip of rests. Start at about 1600 North -North Avenue and go upto about Belmont Ave - 3200 North for lots. If you like Ital. try Carlucci's about 2200 North on Halsted.

Also a great set of Greek places on South Halsted Street from about 200 South to 400 South. Santorini's is great if you're tired on standard Greek fare. Greek Island is my favorite for std. type stuff. Gyros at hot dog stands can be as good as found in most other places Greek restaurants.

A little known local place is Albert's off of Michigan Avenue on Elm Street. Only a few tables with excellent food. About 2 blocks West of Michigan Avenue near the Handcock Center. Downtown have expresso at the 3rd Coast at Deleware and Wabash or other 3rd Coast on Dearborn near Division.

rich -- born and spent 42yrs in the city before the schools drove me to Porter County Indiana -- not known for restaurants.

Agree w/Berghoffs- (for German) food is good. Service is VERY GOOD

> 2) Zum Deutchen Eck

AVOID ZUM DEUTCHEN ECK!!! They were really nasty to my in-law family when we went there for my wife's G'ma's 81st b'day party.
