Box's in Rockford

As long as we're talking about out-of-the-way spots, let me recommend Box's in Rockford. This is owned by the family of Rockford's mayor.

It's a gritty looking place with about six tables, no decor to speak of and absolutely heavenly pork shoulder in a tangy sauce. It comes as a sandwich, between slices of spongy white bread, or as a dinner with the white bread on the side, and your choice of cole slaw, potato salad, french fries or spaghetti. Ribs, chicken and a few other items are also available, but get the pork shoulder.
