Hawaii
Maui in August restaurants

However, you can keep costs down to a reasonable level and still eat well. First, I suggest you prepare all breakfasts and most lunches for yourself. This lets you go somewhere nicer for dinner. There are farmers' markets in both Kihei and somewhere near Lahaina twice weekly. They sell lots of fresh fruit and yummy fruit-breads (banana, pineapple-carrot, etc.), which make great 'tropical' breakfasts. Second, if you want to eat out without spending a lot of money, go to local-style restaurants. There are many small places serving 'plate' lunches and dinners composed of some main dish, rice, and salad, for $4-8. In Kihei, I like the Kal-bi House (Korean, obviously) and Azeka Ribs (Hawaiian lunch counter). In Lahaina, there are a couple places on the South end of Front Street, tucked away off the main drag on a side or back alley. And I can also recommend a local bar and grill with several locations, Koho's, for hearty sandwiches, plates, and such. Finally, I seriously suggest you go to at least one nice restaurant sometime during your stay. Hawaiian Regional Cuisine has recently come to international prominence, and it would be a shame to miss out on a unique opportunity to sample it. > Sorry I can't help on the "not too expensive" part of your request but > treat yourself at least once and go to Roy's in Kanapali. One of the > best meals EVER! I disagree with the above recommendation. After several gourmet-dining- intensive trips to Maui, I don't consider Roy's Kahana to be in the top category. Go to Avalon, A Pacific Cafe Maui, or the Haliimaile General Store instead. These world-class establishments will certainly provide a memorable dining experience.
