Good restaurants in the Kona-Kohala area of Big Island are Palm Cafe in Kailua, Huggo's in Kailua, Sam Choy's in Kailua, Merriman's in Waimea, Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae, and Bamboo in Hawi. Hawaii
Kauai and the Big Island
The Princeville Hotel on the North Shore has two great restaurants (expensive). Friday nights they have a seafood buffet that is the "in" thing to do. La Cascada is wonderful and what a view... Tahiti Nui in Hanalei is a good local kind of funky old place. It's great fun to sit on their porch and check out the mountains and waterfalls. We liked their grilled fish sandwiches for lunch. Kauai was one of our favorite places, especially the north shore.. It's got magic!

La Cascada is wonderful and what a view... The view was great, but you'd enjoy it more during the summer when the sun sets late. Great food, too, but the menu was way too limited. The selection is small, and it doesn't change daily. There's one daily special, which I got while there: seared ahi (tuna) with grilled polenta. Excellent, but really nothing else was too appealing.

I recommend the Hanalei Roll: a typical makizushi with tuna, salmon, scallion, and avocado, deep fried in tempura batter ... a really nice combination of flavors! I love sushi, but I'm reminded of my mother's advice: everything's better deep fried!
