Oh, by the way, Gail : if you are still out there, thanks for your note on the Seafood Connection. : We did try it as you have just read. EL : ### Depends a lot upon what you call unique, and how far north. One of my favorite places is the Crab Pot in Riviera Beach. North on US #1 to where A1A goes over to Singer Island, The Crab Pot is just before the bridge. Open air, and kinda rough. Another place is Crab Louey's in Jupiter. Just east of US 1 in A1A, on the south side of the river, right across from the lighthouse. There are a couple of places north of there that are good, too. Port Salerno, and Stuart, both have some good seafood places. Enjoy. Lars

Unique Seafood in Fort Lauderdale area

I live in Pompano Beach which is the next town north of Ft. Lauderdale. I have two places for you that manage to fit your requirements: 1) Aruba Beach Cafe. Located directly on the ocean at the very east end of Commercial Blvd in Lauderdale By The Sea. Informal, reasonable prices, incredible views and cool ocean breezes. Great seafood, try the conch chowder and fritters for appy's and then the seafood quesidilla stuffed with shrimp, scallops and swordfish chunks! The only other place nearbythat is right on the ocean is the Sea Watch (a few miles north on A1A), and I find that to be a bit less interesting. 2) Calypso Raw Bar and Restaurant. This is in an empty old mall by the railroad tracks in Pompano, but don't be deceived - it is worth the trip. Good prices, very friendly people, nice little place inside, and great Caribbean style seafood and more. Call (305) 942-1633 to find it. I'm not an owner or partner, I just hang around there a lot and stuff my face with great food (good tap beer too, Fosters, Bass)! ALl the locals in Pompano hang out at Calypso to get away from the tourist traps over by the beach and on the Intercoastal. Have fun, email if you need more info. The story goes that the mafia owned the place and ran booze out of there during prohibition. The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is of the 1900's variety. They are known for their "Palm Salad", but it may not be for your taste. Try it. |> Rob Lake |> Environmental Modeling Inc. |> [email removed] |>
