It's on the Connecticut River. The coast is about 10 miles downstream. Very good food, lotsa ambience at the bar (with the original mud and horsehair vaulted ceiling) and the rooms are cozy. My criticisms are that they insist on featuring the most insipid amateur entertainment in the bar, they have a ho-hum selection of taps, they cater mainly to the blue hair crowd and the town (Essex) hates motorcyclists, so we usually stay elsewhere. If you go, check out the Black Duck Inn up the street too.
