Just wondering...Does anyone else out there use Jane & Michael Stern's books "Roadfood/Goodfood" when seeking restaurants on the road? Some of the best, cheapest meals I've ever had in my life was thanks to these two pointing out places like...

Rowe's Family Restaurant in Staunton, VA
The Lobster Pot (at least I think that was the name) in Noank, CT Dodson's (alas---it closed in May :, formerly of Hagerstown, MD

Are there other books like these? Would anyone like to compare notes?

There were a series of paperbacks from the mid-Eighties entitled "The Interstate Gourmet." I have managed to find three of them -- Midwest (found new on a remainder table), Southeast, and Texas/Southwest (found at used bookshops). I am looking for the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and California/Pacific Northwest books.

Two places in the Midwest that made both series:

* Shapiro's Deli, Indianapolis. There are now two locations -- downtown and North (86th Street). Excellent corned-beef sandwiches!
* Young's Jersey Dairy, Yellow Springs, Ohio. This is just five minutes south of I-70 on US 68. Best damn ice-cream and milkshakes around. And, if you get there after midnight (and before they close at 1 AM), the donuts are a dime apiece.

I can vouch personally for both places. 8-)

I have to agree about the Noank, CT place--the name is Lobster in the Rough. Wonderful!

Actually, it's Abbott's Lobster in the Rough in Noank. Terrific place; we've planned three NE vacations around going there for lobster.
