For years, Pepe's was tops. The competition on Wooster street was fierce. Sally's, and the Spot, both just a stone's throw from Pepe's, are both excellent. However, I thought the best pizza in New Haven is off Wooster St. Modern Pizza on State St. is my favorite. If the Venice on Dixwell Av, just north of Bassett St. is still in business, go there. For years, they were the best, but last time I was in New Haven, I heard the family that owned and ran it for years had sold it. There is also a place in the N.W corner of Whalley Av & Ella Grasso Blvd. (the name escapes me for the moment) that has excellent pizza for take-out only. Also check out Bastante's (I may have that name wrong) in Hamden. I think it is on Whalley, south of Evergreen.

I grew up in New Haven, and go back there about twice a year. People tend to be chauvinistic about their home town pizza. People love to shed nostalgic tears over how great the pizza was. In some cases it may be true. I ate incredible pizza all over the country. In some cases (Buffalo comes to mind) it isn't true. I would rank New Haven pizza up with the best. Because of the high standards set by Wooster street yver the last seventy years, New Haven has world class pizza.

Enjoy
