The Moot House for a nice but not stuffy dinner and Charco Broiler for the best steaks in the area are two that come to mind. CB is very casual but great meat. It's been a couple of years but the Columbine Cafe was close to campus and used to have good breakfasts and lunches.

Hit the Rio Grande and try their marguritas.
Best menu items at the Rio are:
anything del Mar
steak burritos
avoid the fajitas...

I found the Moot House uninspired. Just your run of the mill surf/turf/potatos kind of place. Off the top of my head:

      1. Pizza : Cazolla's (sp?) in Old Town, La Madrina,
Pulcinella's for white pizza. Go to Beau Jo's only if you want
a ton of dough with some buffalo meat on top.

      2. Asian : China Palace for Chinese, Saigon 17 for Vietnemese.
Saigon 17 holds it own with any Vietnemese restaurant I've been
to, including Denver, Boulder, Berkeley, Seattle, & Boston.
Lunch on the patio is airy.

      3. Mexican : Surprisingly few good ones here. Las Delicias
behind the Foothills Fashion Mall is good. Go on tuesday for
the Soapapilla lunch special. There's a place North of Old Town
that's pretty good. A new place over by Elizabeth & City Park
has green chili that is approaching critical mass.

      4. Nouvelle: Cuisine Cuisine is pretty good, as innovative as
I've found in FC. I've heard good & bad on Nico's Catacombs. I
      have not been there.

      5. Nepalese: Narahan's is worth a visit.

That's a start.

I've been here 4 years now, and the restaurants are abyssmal but
seem to be improving- with the exception of the as-of-late major
chain action. In Ft. Collins we have about a dozen restaurants that
serve roughly the identical menu: burgers, chxn sandwiches, fried
      anything-that-will-stand-still-long-enough-to-get-battered. To name
a few: Chilis, Bennigans, CB Potts, Smiling Moose, Applebees.

We have some bland 'classic' food: Moot House. "sour cream and fake
bacon with your baked potato sir?"

Chain "upscale" restaurants: Lone Star Steakhouse, Olive Garden,
      Pour La France.

Mediocre Mexican Food: El Burrito, The Rio, Gonzalo's

Expensive and Boring Continental Food: Catacombs

      bitch bitch bitch...

Anyway, here are some good things:

We have 2 good sushi bars: Nemo's and Suehiro. I prefer Suehiro
for the fun atmosphere and it's a little cheaper.

Outstanding pizza at Pulcinella on S. College (paper plates,
plastic silverware) and in the pool hall at Coopersmith's in
      Old Town.

Inexpensive eclectic food at the regularehoopersmiths. Plus some
      pretty good microbrew.

The Rio is a fun place to go, but the only thing that I like to
eat there is the Tostada de fajita. Kind of a salad with marinated
grilled beef on top. Light and tasty.

Fine dining with a fun menu at Jay's Bistro.

Pulcinella also has a fine dining restaurant with outstanding N.
      Italian food. Slow service.

Good Vietnamese food at Young's (moderately dress-up and fun) and
      also at Saigon 17.

Nice breakfasts at Egg and I and also at Pour la France.

Great Sandwiches and hippy hangout at the Pickle Barrel.

Lastly, good espresso bar/pastries at Starry Night Coffee House.

      Those are my heavily-biased opinions.

: I found the Moot House uninspired. Just your run of the mill surf/turf/potatos : kind of place. Off the top of my head:

Agreed!

: 1. Pizza : Cazolla's (sp?) in Old Town, La Madrina, : Pulcinella's for white pizza. Go to Beau Jo's only if you want : a ton of dough with some buffalo meat on top.

Yes, Cozolla's is great. So is Pan Handler's.

: 2. Asian : China Palace for Chinese, Saigon 17 for Vietnemese. : Saigon 17 holds it own with any Vietnemese restaurant I've been : to, including Denver, Boulder, Berkeley, Seattle, & Boston. : Lunch on the patio is airy.

What about Young's Vietnamese Cafe? Nice atmosphere and great food. Don't miss their sesame chicken! Young's is consistently voted the best oriental food in FC by local newspaper readers.

: 3. Mexican : Surprisingly few good ones here. Las Delicias : behind the Foothills Fashion Mall is good. Go on tuesday for : the Soapapilla lunch special. There's a place North of Old Town : that's pretty good. A new place over by Elizabeth & City Park : has green chili that is approaching critical mass.

Try El Burrito on Linden St. for your hole-in-the-wall authentic mexican food. It ain't fancy, but the green chili bowl will knock your socks off some days. Gonzala's, in the Old Northern Hotel, is also good, but don't look for outrageously hot dishes. The most popular mexican spot in town is the Rio Grande. The food is good, but mild. If you want to sample the strongest and best margarita in town, go here!

: 4. Nouvelle: Cuisine Cuisine is pretty good, as innovative as : I've found in FC. I've heard good & bad on Nico's Catacombs. I : have not been there.

Nico's is fine dining at a fine dining price. great wine list.

: 5. Nepalese: Narahan's is worth a visit.

: That's a start.

don't miss Coopersmith's. this is a local brewpub where you can view the brewing apparatus downstairs. brews and food are both very good. my favoritesv are the veggie chili and highland cottage pie.

for reasonably priced italian food, try Bisetti's. this is also another "best of ft collins" winner for many years. manicotti and pesto are my two favorites. if you're agarlic freak, try Pasta Jays. they also have very nice patio dining.

for breakfasts, the best breakfast burrito is served at In The City Cafe. the Silver Grill is an old fashioned diner that serves up great food at low prices. Joe's Fireside Inn is a slightly more upscale place with many good menu selections. Pour La France has the best pastries.

all of the places i've mentioned, except Young's, are located in the Old Town or downtown area. IMHO, this is where the best eating can be done in fc. oh yes, don't miss desert at Walrus Ice Cream--also downtown. if you're here on a thursday evening, check out the free outdoor concerts in old town plaza. they happen every thursday at 7 p.m.

enjoy your trip!

For Vietnemese I prefer Little Saigon Cafe especially for noodle bowl.

I agree but the lines at Walrus can be long.

      This person:

            a) A friend of the family or
            b) has an advertising commitment to fulfill or
            c) has never seen a good wine list.

Nico's has a boring continental menu and has a vastly overpriced
and uninspired wine list. Examples: Guenoc, Glen Ellen, etc...

There are some nice French choices, but they are outrageously
priced. The California selections suck, and there is not much to
speak of in terms of Italy or Australia. Putting Jordan and
Far Niente on your list does not earn you accolades.

In Nico's defense, people in Ft. Collins don't care about wine,
they drink nice beers. It wouldn't be cost effective to put
together a nice list in this town- no one would pay attention
      to it.

I think we may have hit a nerve with me...
