VICTORIA:

Sooke Harbour House -- Located about 30 minutes from Vic in Sooke. Features seafood, including unusual varieties such as barnacles and skate, as well as some of the best oysters you'll ever eat. Kind of expensive, but worth every cent.

Herald Street Cafe -- Innovative cuisine, lots of pasta and seafood. Lamb with mint bearnaise is particularly good.

Szechuan -- Featuring -- you guessed it -- szechuan. Good, spicy Chinese food for an excellent price.

John's Place -- A great lunch spot. Very casual, very good sandwiches and specials. Good after-hours fare as well.

VANCOUVER:

Tsunami Sushi -- There's good sushi all over Vancouver, but I like this place a lot. Sushi is displayed on little boats that float by, allowing customers to pick and choose. A great spot for "beginner" sushi eaters.

Delilah's -- VERY trendy, very good. Go early on Friday and Saturday nights or you'll have trouble getting in. Lovely courtyard for al fresco dining on warm summer nights. Menu changes daily -- two table d'hotes -- a three course, and a five course. Choose the five course. And definitely order one of their cool martini's -- the cranberry one is especially good.

The Cannery -- Reasonably priced, good seafood in
a lovely atmospere (a refurbished cannery on the waterfront). Reserve a window table. Also features an extensive wine list with a number of VQA B.C. wines.

Have a great time!!!

In my view, the best restaurants in Victoria are the following (no particular order):

1. San Remo's (Hillside and Quadra) - Huge helpings, wonderful ambiance, great
   prices

2. Cecconi's Trattoria (North Dairy and Shelbourne) - phenomenal real Italian
food and a good wine list

3. Pagliacci's (Broad Street) - wonderful jazz and blues music, long lineups
   but tremendous food and atmosphere

4. Herald Street Caffe (Herald Street near Douglas) - Excellent too

5. Captain's Palace (Belleville Street)

6. Spinnaker's Pub (Vic West)- wonderful home brew

7. Swans Pub (Pandora and Wharf Streets) -wonderful home brew

8. Camille's (Bastion Square)

I have left out the very expensive places, which are good but beyond most budgets.

When my wife and I feel like a nice, quiet, relaxing dinner we often go to Camille's (in Bastion Square, downtown Victoria). The food is always excellent and imaginative, with a changing choice of 'ethnic theme' every week as well as a great a la carte selection. The menus themselves, all different and hand-bound, are works of art. And they have a very nice choice of wines. The price is quite reasonable, too. Oh, by the way, when making reservations ask to be seated in the old part of the restaurant (a while ago they expanded a bit). Nothing wrong with the new part, but the old is more charming and cozy.

This is just one of our favourite haunts (Victoria has rather blossomed on the restaurant scene), but if I had to choose I would recommend it whole- heartedly.
