I recently traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia, and ate at 3 vegetarian restaurants while there. Here are my results:

The definite standout of the trip was Habibi's, a Lebanese Vegetarian restaurant, 1128 West Broadway (between Granville and Oak). I got there at about 10:15 pm on a Friday night, about 45 minutes before closing. As I came in the door, the chef, who was talking to some customers, informed me that they were out of some menu items. I said that was fine.

As I perused the menu, which is basically made up of dips served with pita, the waitress informed me that the chef was going to "fix something up for me" and asked if there was anything I didn't eat. I told her my restrictions (no dairy, everything cooked) and after a short discussion about what "cooked" meant, she went off.

Well, what was delivered was the one-person sampler, 3 items in small bowls plus a basket of pita bread quarters. The three dishes the chef chose for me were: hummus (garbanzo beans) was one, the second, served warm, was green beans in a tomato-based sauce, and the third, also warm, I couldn't identify (looked like little white dots in a tomato-based sauce, although it tasted different from the second dish).

It was all absolutely delicious. Gourmet level. Every bite a delight, no kidding. When the pita got low it was replenished. Service was friendly and prompt. Not a place for a diet (lots of tasty oil in the dishes) but a place for an excellent taste treat. Highly recommended and good value for the money.

Nice ambiance, dim lighting, reasonable sound level.

I also ate at The Naam (which my b-and-b chef described as "hippie vegetarian"), 2724 West Fourth Avenue near MacDonald, http://www.thenaam.com/naam/ (menus available as scanned graphics). This may be the only 24x7 vegetarian restaurant in creation; what a great concept.

This was a fun place, live acoustic music, moderately loud but not so much as would make conversation difficult. Service efficient, although you need to keep track of who your waitperson is. The menu clearly indicated which dishes were vegan (most entrees, and many other dishes) or which contained egg and not dairy. They serve Canadian, Mexican, and Asian food.

I had the Naam Steak platter, a vegetable-nut steak with miso gravy had a nice nutty flavor. The sesame fries, slices of potato (with skin) with sesame seeds were tasty, and the steamed veggies were satisfactorily al dente.

Less successful was the Noh Pie I had for dessert. The pie had no eggs, milk, or sugar, being sweeted by banana and dates (the pie also has nuts). It wasn't bad, but definitely an acquired taste.

Also good value for the money.

Finally, I ate at Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant http://www.bokong.com/ 8100 Ackroyd Road at Number 3 Road in Richmond, just north of Westminster Highway. Bright, clean, friendly service, the food was above average but not outstanding. I'd eat there again, but not go out of my way for it.

Vancouver Magazine did some ratings on restaurants not too long ago. You can peruse the ariticle. But, not all BO-KONG's are the same. The Bo Kong on Main Street has been a "bit" better as of late. Their "steak" dinners are suprisingly good considering [I love Gotham's Steaks]. http://www.vanmag.com/

Habibi's has consistenly been rated very high, but the Naam is not known for its service. I have yet to find a non-dairy desert that tastes acceptable to me.

Next time you are there, check out Woodlands restaurant. They have incredible gourmet *vegan* food, and it's sold by weight.

It's owned by Arran Stephens, the man who started Lifestream Natural foods.
