Go for lunch if you want to save some money. Dinner entrees are in the $25 range I think. Cheap (lunch/light dinner?) Try Basha's, on the south side opf St Catherine Street, above a sports store. Cafeteria style, but fantastic Lebanese food like shish taook, tabbouli, etc. I personally don't care for the high-fat, high-salt smoked meat sandwiches at Ben's, but they do have a devoted following. A bit out of the way but worth the trip is another Lebanese place called Daou, near metro Jean-Talon. Dinner for 2 is about $35, food is great, reservations advised because it's very popular. There are several nice cafes along Sherbrooke near the Musee des Beaux- Arts, including La Tulipe Noire in the Alcan building, corner Sherbrooke and Stanley. Their Dream Pie is what I'd bring to a desert island. And, try souvlaki from anywhere if you love garlic and barbecued stuff. Montreal souvlaki is unique and delicious. We make souvlaki pilgrimages every time we visit Montreal. Or, go the cafe where my brother Paul waits on tables (cafe Melies, on St Denis) and say hi to him for me! He could give you some neat suggestions too. Have a great trip! Have fun! Andrea [email removed]

Restaurants in Montreal??
Well, I'm not sure whether it's absolutely the BEST in Montreal, but: Les Primeurs, in the Old City (can't think of the street name right now, but it's the main street through the lower section). Wonderful food, attractively un-stuffy atmosphere, friendly, attentive staff (and they are equally friendly to non-Francophones, which is not always the case in Montreal), and not outrageously priced - in fact, I've had a few dishes there that I would have willingly paid quite a bit more for, if necessary. -Jim
