No trip to Montreal is complete without a steamee at the Montreal Pool Room on St. Lawrence Blvd. or a corner cut, medium smoked meat sandwich from the Hebrew Delicatesen a.k.a. Schwartz'. You also have to line up for fresh bagels from the St. Viateur Bagel Factory (the rest of my family prefer Fairmount's bagels), black or white, poppy seed vs. sesame seeds. For better dining (?) the ribs at the Bar-b-Barn on Guy street or the prime rib in the Old City at Gibbey's. A restaurant I have heard great things about is La Toque on St. Dennis street in the Latin Quarter. If you want good food and value hit the BYOB restaurants, largely Greek and Italian off St. Lawrence Blvd. Quebec City is a marvellous place if one likes to eat. One of the best meals I have ever had was at a la Grand Table de Serge Bruyere in the old city. There was also a very "french" bistro down at the wharf level Cafe International or something to that effect. Very Paris, black and white uniformed waiters, lots of nickel and posters and great mussels with pommes frites. I also enjoyed the wine and pate at a little wine bar right down near p'tit Champlain called Le Pape George or something to that effect. Language was not a problem...of course the more I drink the lesser the (perceived) problem. Bob Macdonald Edmonton, Alberta CANADA [email removed].
