Where do we *have* to eat?

I recommend Valencia Street between 18th and 22nd (approx).

A month ago I would not have imagined making such a recommendation, but having seen it with my own eyes, I can tell you it is one of the hottest streets in town.

As you may know, Valencia is in the Mission District, notorious for Mexican gangs. But the place has been overrun with GREAT restaurants and the gangs are no where in sight (they're probably busy selling drugs on Mission and 24th).

I've only been to Val 21 and Radio Valencia, but there are about a dozen really fun looking places.

I would suggest Betelnut in the marina district. It is an asian fusion restaurant. It is pretty good and seems to be very trendy. Better get reservations well in advance.

My one experience at The Slanted Door resulted in the best Vietnamese meal I've had in the Bay Area - it tends toward creative cuisine, sort of the opposite end of the spectrum from a pho place. Despite the low statistics, I would recommend it without hesitation. I've also enjoyed Timo's, the tapas place, although I wouldn't put it in quite the same high category.

However, it's hard to know if any of these fit the request - maybe they want something like Masa's or Chez Panisse....

For the best meal, I'd recommend Paul's in Lakeside Village (Ocean Avenue between Junipero Serra and 19th Ave.)

For more San Francisco-ish, try Leon's Barbeque on Sloat Blvd., across from the Zoo, near the beach, and in the shadow of one of the last Doggie Diner heads I know of. Or, Tommy's Joynt on Van Ness at Geary.

For a little more upscale, Yank Sing near Embarcadero Ctr (or over by 1st between Market and Mission).

I'm sure you'll get as many different recommendations as responses. 8^)
